After Palme’s death, Bernt Carlsson was a political orphan. His experience in international affairs, especially concerning Third World liberation, led to his designation in July 1987 as United Nations Commissioner for Namibia during the Southwest African nation’s decolonialization. Carlsson publicly sought U.N. action against foreign companies illegally exploiting Namibia’s diamonds, uranium and other natural resources. Carlsson worked hard to overcome U.S. delays to Namibia’s independence.

In late 1988, Namibia’s independence was finally in sight. On his way to a crucial United Nations meeting in New York, on December 21, 1988, Bernt Carlsson was one of the 243 passengers aboard Pan Am flight 103 when it was blown up over the Scottish town of Lockerbie.

The most plausible explanation of the Lockerbie massacre has always been that it was an act of Iranian revenge for the U.S. Navy July 3, 1988 shooting down of an Iranian civilian airliner flying over the Persian Gulf six months earlier. On July 3, 1988, the USS Vincennes had fired a guided missile at the regularly scheduled flight to Dubai that was flying in Iranian air space, and killing all 290 people aboard, including 66 children. Far from apologizing, the United States decorated the military officers responsible.

Many years later, former British diplomat Patrick Haseldine came up with a new conspiracy theory to explain the Lockerbie massacre. Carlsson, the most prominent person aboard, was en route to New York to advance Namibian independence. The South African Apartheid regime probably feared Carlsson’s public denunciation of illegal uranium mining in Namibia. According to Haseldine, an official delegation of 22 South African diplomats changed their flight reservations from Pan Am 103 at the last minute.

This proves nothing. It merely shows that the combination of secretive powers and unsolved mysteries are bound to cause people to seek explanations, however erroneous. When so many strange things are happening, it is normal that individuals try to figure them out, at risk of being labeled “conspiracy theorists.”
